Solar Panel Cleaning and Your Warranty: What You Need to Know

If your solar panels are under a 25-year power-output warranty (most are), you have written cleaning requirements you probably haven't read. Doing the cleaning wrong — or letting the wrong contractor do it — silently voids your coverage. Here's what to know.

What every major panel manufacturer requires

We pulled the warranty terms from LG, Panasonic, SunPower, REC, LONGi, JinkoSolar, Q CELLS, and Canadian Solar. They differ in detail but converge on five non-negotiable cleaning requirements:

1. No abrasive materials. Steel wool, scouring pads, stiff bristles, and "magic erasers" all void coverage. They scratch the anti-reflective coating and create permanent micro-fractures.
2. No harsh chemicals. Bleach, ammonia, vinegar, dish soap, glass cleaner, and any solvent leave residue that bakes into the EVA encapsulant and accelerates degradation. Most manufacturers explicitly call these out.
3. No high-pressure water. Pressure-washers exceed the seal rating on the panel frame. Water intrusion behind the glass causes delamination, which is a top-three claim category and explicitly excluded if pressure-washing is in the maintenance log.
4. No foot traffic on the glass. Walking on panels — even with soft-soled shoes — creates microcracks that show up years later as hotspots. Manufacturers can detect this in a failed panel forensic.
5. Only pure water + soft-bristle methods. Deionized water (DI) is the gold standard. Soft-rotary brushes with synthetic bristles < 0.3 mm thick are the only contact method specifically referenced as safe in major manufacturer literature.

What "warranty-safe" actually looks like in practice

How to verify a cleaner before hiring

Ask three questions, and require the answers in writing:

1. Do you use 100% deionized water? (If "no" or "city water" — walk away.)
2. Will any of your team walk on the panels? (Correct answer: no, pole-fed only.)
3. Do you provide a written warranty-safe statement with the invoice? (If "no" — you have no documentation if there's ever a claim.)
