Why Rain Doesn't Clean Your Solar Panels in Wisconsin

The most expensive myth in residential solar is that rain will keep your panels clean. It won't. In fact, rainfall in Wisconsin actively works against you over a multi-year horizon — and the data is unambiguous.

What rain actually does to your panels

Rainwater in the Great Lakes basin carries dissolved minerals from regional limestone aquifers — calcium carbonate, magnesium, and silica. When a raindrop lands on a hot panel, the water evaporates and leaves those minerals behind as a microscopic spot. Repeat this across a season and you have a permanent haze that simple rinsing cannot remove.

Worse: rain rinses off only the loose dust at the center of the panel and concentrates the heavier particulate matter (pollen, agricultural dust, soot, road grit) along the lower edge and frame, where surface tension holds it in place. That edge buildup is what blocks production — not the surface dust most owners assume.

The NREL field data

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has been measuring rain-only vs. mechanically-cleaned solar arrays in real-world deployments since 2018. Across a 16-site US study, even rainy-climate installations lost 4.3% to 15.5% of annual production to soiling. The median was around 5%. Sites near agricultural operations or industrial corridors trended toward the upper bound.

The IEA-PVPS 2022 soiling report reaches the same conclusion globally: 3% to 5% is the irreducible annual loss baseline even in well-rinsed climates, and ag/dust-exposed sites regularly exceed 15%.

What this means in dollars (Wisconsin)

For a typical 24-panel residential rooftop system in Madison, WI:

  • ~10,300 kWh of annual production at zero soiling
  • Residential rate ~$0.16/kWh → about $1,650/yr of value
  • At 5% loss: ~$82/yr left on the roof
  • At 10% loss (heavy pollen / ag adjacency): ~$165/yr

For a 200-panel commercial array the same math at EIA's Wisconsin commercial rate ($0.131/kWh) and 5–15% loss puts the unrecovered revenue at $550 to $1,700 per year. On a 1 MW site, $8K to $23K per year (NREL field data + EIA WI commercial rate).

The cleaning that actually fixes it

Only mechanical cleaning with deionized (DI) water and soft-rotary brushes removes the baked-on mineral film and edge buildup. Deionized water has had its mineral content stripped, so it dries spot-free; soft-rotary brushes contact only the glass surface (no foot traffic, no abrasion). That's the only technique explicitly approved by every major panel manufacturer.
